EGLESNA and the World of Linen
At EGLESNA, linen is more than a material. It is a plant that has accompanied humanity for thousands of years. It is a natural fibre valued for its durability, comfort, and closeness to everyday life. It is also an inspiration to create differently — more slowly, more consciously, and closer to authentic human experience. Here, the story of linen, its remarkable qualities, and EGLESNA’s choice to create knitted garments from 100% linen yarn come together.

Linen — a fibre that has accompanied humanity for thousands of years
Linen begins with a plant.
Flax (Linum usitatissimum) is one of the oldest cultivated plants known to humanity. Its Latin name means "the most useful" — a title it has carried for thousands of years.
Archaeological discoveries show that flax was already being used more than 9,000 years ago. The earliest cultivation is believed to have taken place in the Near East and throughout the Mediterranean region.
Flax is mentioned in the civilizations of Ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome, as well as in the Bible, where it is associated with everyday life, craftsmanship and purity.
For thousands of years, linen has been used to create clothing, household textiles, sails, ropes and countless objects essential to daily life. Across cultures, it has been valued for its strength, durability and natural comfort.
Over time, flax spread throughout Europe, Scandinavia and the Baltic region. It is believed that flax has been cultivated in Lithuania for more than 4,000 years.
In Ancient Egypt, linen was regarded as a symbol of purity and light. It was worn by pharaohs, priests and nobility, and linen cloth was even used in mummification rituals.
For millennia, linen has remained one of the world's most valued natural materials. In some parts of Europe, linen cloth was treasured and passed down through generations as a family heirloom.
In Lithuania, linen holds a special place in cultural memory. For centuries it was grown, spun, woven and passed on together with knowledge, patience and respect for craftsmanship.
Linen accompanied people through every stage of life and became one of the most important natural materials in the Baltic region.
Standing before a blooming flax field can feel as though the sky itself has descended to the earth. Thousands of delicate blue flowers remind us that true value often lies in simplicity.
It was in Lithuania that EGLESNA began its own relationship with linen.
Not only as a material.
But as a way of life.
As a feeling of calm, simplicity and natural comfort.
